Garden Cheer and a bit of fungi thrown in!!

Spring has arrived early and the wild daffodils are out in the lane, I have even seen wild violets and the pussy willow is in full glow, its yellow furry catkins bouncing in the breeze like school girls tossing their curls. Gardeners are making preparation for the new season and everyone is busy out their with secateurs, spades and hoes. Everyone except me. So perhaps now is the time to come clean and admit that my garden is a mess, a true nirvana of neglect.

I would hate you to think that I have been lazy, it is just that I have been otherwise occupied with earth of another kind, the sort you can meld and mold into shapes and kiln fire.

In my studio I have been working towards spring too and I do have flowers in my garden to prove it, here they are then the first of this years spring blooms fresh from the kiln.

Flower markers for the forgetful gardener, a big smiling flower ( shades of Bill and Ben the flower pot men and little weed I think somewhere in my childhood !) with helpful hints as to what is planted where amongst the undergrowth, and they come with three options, seeds, bulbs and of course weeds!!

By way of a special request for Bayou who has a garden which would put mine to shame, I have made some quirky fungi to add a bit of colour and well FUN ( fun.. fungi.. fun gi.. oh forget it!!) . These jolly chaps have un-glazed ceramic stems and bright and spotty caps which balance on them with the option of the words bulbs or seeds glazed on them. Colours and designs vary as each is a whimsical one off, they come complete with their very own chopstick to push up through the hole in the stalk and anchor firmly into the soil so no naughty elf pixie or garden gnome can run off with them when no one is watching.

Happy new year !!

It has been a long time since I was last here and I was living a different life then . Its way time for me to get my finger nails dirty again so that is what I have been doing . I started the new year with a decision to do something a bit different and to play with some new ideas in clay. Here are a few images of my first steps in this direction. Hope you like them...

Flowers that bloom in the Spring tra-la!

Who cares if it's raining outside and blowing a most unseasonal gale ? My pots and planters are bursting with brightness of the sort that even the cruelest wind can not batter and lay low, my hand made glazed ceramic flowers. They stand on wooden stems at 38cm high ; each flower head is roughly 9cm wide and come in a selection of colours and styles depending on my whimsy.

The price? 15€ a mixed bunch of three including postage and packaging anywhere in the world.

Nativity time

It may seem early for Christmas without even having had halloween yet but making a nativity set takes time when each figure is hand built glazed and fired and you have 3 angels, 2 shepherd and a ram three kings and the holy family to do so I need to start early if I am to get it ready !!

Here is this years nativity a very jolly and bright and rather fun set and to give an idea of size the kings stand about 13 cm high . Each figure is majolica glazed and no character is the same .

I think that is jolly good value for something unique which a family can cherish for generations.

Autumn is upon us and its time to get out those winter woolies to keep warm. I am a disaster when it comes to knitting but I do love the look of chunky jumpers to snuggle into on cold days and envy those who are wizards with knitting needles!

To make my shop bought jumpers stand out from the crowd I like to add something a bit different so I have made some big ceramic buttons to jazz up knit wear and add an individual touch. Here are just someof my designs all ready and packaged for a local shop.

Each button is handmade in Earthenware and glazed before being kiln fired. Buttons vary in size, the ones shown are about 2" wide and have 2 holes.

Spotty ladies

I find myself surrounded my spotty women, no not an awful epidemic more a ceramic obsession with me at present. My studio is filling up with these jolly women bearing hearts and flowers and wearing polkadot dresses in different hues and rather splendid hair styles!!

Retro fun !

When we were kids we lived a very Janet and John lifestyle, summer hols in the cottage in the country and home made ginger beer, with jolly memories of fun in the sun and innocent enjoyment with families and friends. There were a group of about 5 families all with kids about the same age and when we all got together we kids would disappear out into the wilds shrieking and building camps and the adults would sit together sharing jokes , cheap wine and putting the world to rights in good company.




Each year one of the families trotted off to France for the summer hols camping which in those days was very chic and daring and on for that they had a state of the art brand new and fresh from the production line, mint green VW camper complete with striped awning and a pop up roof. I remember when they first bought it and we crawled all over it, oohing and awing in awe it was so cool and so trendy and we had never ever seen anything like it before. I was as smitten as Mr Toad was with his gypsy caravan and I have been smitten with VW campers ever since.


Now it seems they are very much back in fashion with their retro design and 1960's style and I am still very much a fan so here is my small homage to that Westphalia wonder van

Dreaming of sunshine

What with christmas, lots of visitors and lots of snow the new year has so far been rather hectic but not very productive.

I decided it was about time I embraced spring ( well ever hopeful!) and got down to some work. Beautiful though the long hard winter has been I needed the promise of something warmer when the cattle are out in the fields again and the countryside comes to life once more . I have as my screen saver an endless array of phototgrpahs I have taken since we moved in here, images of the fields whch surround where we live and they always make me feel happy.

Here we have then inspired by daily walks in under a clear blue sky tiles of the cows and pigs that are part of farm life here in the wilds of Brittany. They are all majolica glazed and fired at high temperature on beautiful italian hand made terracotta bisque tiles and measure 20cm by 10 cm and are about 10mm thick, nice chunky tiles to frame or just prop up on the mantlepiece or of course include in your tiling scheme amongst other plains tiles.

Christmas is coming....

December has crept in this morning , bringing with it, a cold and frosty dawn, the water troughs are frozen and the grass had a pleasing crunch as I trudged through it out to feed the animals. I love the first few days of December. Time to look forward to Christmas and all the joy it brings!
Christmas for me is the busiest time of year , and each year I try to design something a little different for my clients although the Christmas hanging dove above is a perennial favourite as are the holly stars . This year customers seem to be taking the patriotic route ordering lots of the union jack doves and stars and hearts as well as the stars and stripes which is popular with my American customers .

Hearts are a constant theme but after a trip down to the South of France to see the Carmargue this summer I fell in love with the floral motifs of the gypsies beautiful fabrics and embossed leather designs and designed these hearts with an embossed floral design.

I love Mistletoe and the wonderful way nature creates such symmetry. We have great balls of it in the trees here and I have used the same motif on all sorts of decorations this year including hearts and doves as well and ceramic Christmas gift labels using my mistletoe design .

Of course Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without an invitation to kiss under the mistletoe and this 10cm heart on its Gingham ribbon has just the message for anyone who is shy in coming forward.

It is that time of year again when a young womans fancy turns to love and alas most young men are, as ever, at a total loss as to how to be romantic. Well Chez Nous anyway!!! It's hard each year to come up with a valentine's design that is a little different from the cuddly bears hearts and flowers image that abound so I thought Id try something a bit Gothic and more sophisticated this year to add to my collection and hopefully tempt a Romeo or two to make a romantic gesture!

Ho ho ho Christmas has come early and its all ED's fault!!

You know how it is, you think someone is sweet and kind and then blow me down with a feather you find that under that gentle demeanour is hiding a grim determination and you discover that the woman you knew as a charming English rose is in fact really a hard bitten bully after all !

For months Elizabeth D has been gently prodding me to do a "give away" ~on my blog , and I keep saying Ok yes of course, blah de blah and never getting around to it , Yesterday she gave me a prod with a sharp stick and reminded me , yet again in no uncertain terms, that I should get my finger out and do as I was told.

So, here I am doing as I was told to do . Asking a band of total strangers if they'd like a chance of a freebee something or other that I have made . Well would you ? It might be a ceramic heart or a Christmas decoration or card ( I know I know Christmas already but yes here in retail land Noel starts on 16th October and wow betide the artisan who has not got their stock sorted by then, sorry you din't think Santas helper did it all over night did you?!). It could be a tile or a tiny cat or goodness knows what I haven't got that far yet so its a bit of a pig in a poke but whatever it is it will be packaged up and posted with love from me to you.Apparently it works like this all one needs to do is leave a comment on this blog, and if you find your name picked at random to receive something from my box of creations. I am not sure what length of time these "give aways" run for ,being a novice at this, but how about I say the winner will be drawn at random on October 27th 2008 , midday French time and I am relying on ED to remind me of that too! PS The Christmas card above is one of several I have been working on this summer..the angel is wooden and hangs on wire and can be detached from the card and used as an ornament afterwards. Below are two of a set of three ceramic American Patriotic Christmas cards , the third is a dove in the same design, for those in the USA I also do Union Jack ones too.., Nothing like making Christmas cards in August to get you in the holiday mode!

I started this long long ago on my return to France after our trip to Morocco but then the Computer God cursed my internet connection and it has sat here dormant and unloved whilst I gave up and sauntered off to play in Italy Greece and various ports in between.

I went to Morocco hoping to be inspired by all the ceramics and tiles and wondering if they might in turn influence my own work. In the end, beauteous and abundant though the tiles were, it was the over all colour and designs that captured my imagination not only in the tiles but in every aspect of life there. Everything is so vivid and even the humblest pieces of furniture become a work of art form in themselves covered in traditional Berber designs.



I had planned to write about about how the Spanish and Moorish cultures had influenced ceramic design in Morocco and visa-versa, to recommend the best museums to visit to explore the decorative culture of the area to describe, as many have before, the infinite skill and patience of the craftsmen who spend their days engrossed in the making of the small tiles that when placed together form the Zillij designs which go back centuries and are still sought after the world over... how the skills and tools used have not changed for generations and so much more

In the end pictures speak louder than anything I can say so , instead, here are some photographs of some of the eye catching designs I fell in love with in Morocco. I hope they delight and inspire you too.
